Road Trip to Vegas 2004

Mom, Dad and Donna had to get to the airport by 5:15 a.m. on Saturday the 16th for Donna’s 7:15 flight. When they returned we were on the road by 7:00. Our first night would be spent in Holbrook, AZ because Maggie and I wanted to visit the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert. We checked in, got the trailer unhitched and were headed for the park by 3:00 p.m. We stayed until it was getting dark, around 6:00, then headed back by the way of Jim Grey’s rock store.

The campground’s flyer had his coupon for one pound of petrified wood free, so we stopped there for souvenirs. Maggie handed over the coupon, and they told us to go out the side door and pick our own pieces, using the scale to weigh them. Well, there was a big pile of the stuff out there, so we poked around trying to approximate a pound of rocks. When we were ready we started looking around for the scale, but didn’t see it at first. I noticed a panel with red digital numbers on the side of the building. I walked up the ramp to the panel and noticed that the numbers had changed. Then when Maggie walked up behind me they changed again! We were standing on the scale! Once the mystery of the scale was solved we paid for the other trinkets that we found and headed back to the trailers. Mom was serving chicken pot pies that night and they were yummy. The next morning we attached the trailer and headed east again. Our destination on Sunday was a Good Sam campsite in Amarillo, TX. When we drove in there was a note on the door that said pick a spot, fill out the form, enclose the payment and drop it in the slot, as the owners were attending an RV show! The campground was sparse, the showers nice, but the flies were annoying! It took us another full day to clear all of them out of the van.
